It is time to think about the evolution of communities as Gen Now (ages 16-35) begins to enter the home market in record numbers in many countries over the next decade. They will reinvent living spaces and neighborhoods in the same way they are reinventing all aspects of society.
Society will need to have more interdependence than we have seen in a long time as economic and technological changes force the private utopia of recent times into the emotionally supportive upburbia of future.

I fell in love with this sign from the Lodsh booth at the recent Maison et Objet trade fair: “Some people feel the rain, others just get wet”. It’s a perfect statement about experiencing life.
As we continue to struggle with a lagging economic scenario, consumers look toward intangibles to fulfill rising expectations on receiving ‘more for less’, whether it is regarding products or services.

As we enter this New Year, it’s time to replace 2011 conversations with 2012 realities. “Occupy Wall Street” remains as a movement to express a need for change but the mantra for many is becoming “DIWM – Do-It-With-Me”, as people take more responsibility for that which they can control.
Supporting local economies, working to create quality of life eco-systems, doing more with less; all examples of a return to a renewed dependence on ourselves, friends, family and community.
